The Dorling One-Name Study started in 1984. Work has continued over the years and most present day Dorling can easily be traced back to 19th century Dorlings and beyond. More information can be found at The Guild of One-Name Studies website. Information about the Dorling Project DNA project can be found Family Tree DNA.

West Stow: Frederick James 1913 in 1934
Frederick began tracing his family history when he retired and we were in touch in the 1980s, but at that time we couldn't link him to a particular Dorling branch. His family had 4 generations in the Cold Stream Guards.
Many years later, about 2008, when Fred would have been very elderly if still living, I suddenly found information to link him to the West Stow branch. I found his name and address in the telephone directories and rang. His wife anwered and he was still living but couldn't come to the phone as he was too deaf to use the phone. I wrote to him with the information and later sent him his ancestor's military records from The National Archives. Fred then became one of the first members of the Dorling DNA Project helping to identify the YDNA signature of the West Stow branch.
